Requirements of transportation of dangerous goods

Dangerous goods are substances, materials and articles that can cause serious harm to humans, equipment and / or the environment due to its capability to explode or ignite, as well as to produce toxic, corrosive and radioactive effects.

The transportation of such substances and materials in Europe is regulated by the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR), done in 1957 in Geneva.

What types of goods are considered dangerous?

  • Class 1– Explosives, as well as pyrotechnics and devices that contain explosives.
  • Class 2 – Gases, toxic and non-toxic, flammable and non-flammable.
  • Class 3– Flammable liquids as well as liquids that emit flammable vapors.
  • Class 4.1–Readily combustible solids and solids which may cause fire through friction.
  • Class 4.2– Substances (liquids or solids) that may spontaneously heat up and ignite during transportation.
  • Class 4.3 – Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases.
  • Class 5.1– Oxidizing agents – mostly non-combustible substances that contribute to the ignition of other materials and emit oxygen, causing more intense combustion.
  • Class 5.2– Organic peroxides – mostly flammable substances that are highly flammable and sensitive to mechanical damage.
  • Class 6.1– Toxic substances that can cause serious consequences for humans or animals if swallowed, inhaled or upon contact with skin.
  • Class 6.2 – Infectious substances, as well as pathogens, that can cause injuries or death to humans or animals upon contact.
  • Class 7– Radioactive materials.
  • Class 8– Corrosive substances, than can cause damage to the skin and respiratory tract as well as towards other goods and vehicles. Contact with other organic materials and chemicals can cause a fire.
  • Class 9– Miscellaneous dangerous good that do not belong to any class mentioned above but its transportation and storage requires special conditions.
